The Citizen Initiatives for Development Research Network(CIDReN)
On the 30th and 31st of January 2014 the First European Conference on Citizen Initiatives for Global Solidarity took place in Brussels under the header ‘Mobilising European Citizens for Global Development’. The conference was building on earlier experiences and policy responses to the substantial growth of citizen initiatives in the field of global solidarity in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium and France to now map and discuss this important phenomenon at the European level.
The conference was hosted by the Research Institute for Work and Society (HIVA - KU Leuven, Belgium) and the CIDIN institute from Radboud University of Nijmegen, in cooperation with and the support from a range of Dutch and Belgium partners (including NCDO & the Wild Geeze Foundation).
An important outcome of the 2014 conference was the set-up of the research network CIDReN on the topic of citizen initiatives to connect researchers in different European countries. The CIDReN network will facilitate and support the achievement of the following objectives: (1) exchanging information on research of CIs, (2) increasing the visibility of researchers in this area, (3) attracting research about CIs and research funds, and (4) gradually establishing a research community focusing on CIs.
The network will be both a goal in itself (sharing, informing,…) as a means to legitimise CI research in the different European countries represented in the network.
